Entry requirements

Normally either a first or second class honours degree or an equivalent professional qualification and/or appropriate practical experience.

Course aims

To provide a working knowledge of the EU’s Institutional framework, including the legislative process and the judicial system; To develop an understanding of economic and political integration; To offer a broad choice of specialist modules that reflect current academic and professional discourse; To enable coherent understanding of the relationship between the commercial, social and political aims of the EU.

Course modules

In order to achieve the award of Postgraduate Certificate in European Union Law students must chose to study either Module One and Module Two of the LLM programme or alternatively select two subject areas from Module Three and a further two subjects from Module Four.

Module 1: Institutional Structure and Constitutional Governance in the European Union
Module 2: Economic Governance and the Internal Market
Module 3 Options: Pool 1 - Choose 2 out of 5:
•    EU Competition Law (C)
•    European Family Law (S)
•    EU Employment Law (S)
•    Regulation of Banking and Financial Services in the EU (C)
•    EU Public Procurement Law(C)
Module 4 Options: Pool 2 - Choose 2 out of 5:
•    EU Company Law (C)
•    Regulation of Intellectual Property Rights in the EU (C)
•    Consumer Law (C, S)
•    EU Social Security Law (S)
•    EU Environmental Law and Policy (C, S)
C= Commercial Module
S= Social law and policy module

Teaching and assessment methods

The programme is taught by distance learning combined with short residential courses. All modules are assessed by written coursework. Students are also able to access ongoing study support over the telephone, by e-mail or fax by directing enquiries through the Course Administrator.

Normally either a first or second class honours degree or an equivalent professional qualification.

Course aims

•    To provide an understanding of the legal basis of employment relations;
•    To provide a working knowledge of the UK and European Union legislation and case law in the employment sphere;
•    To analyse the scope and limitation of the law in relation to combating discrimination;
•    To understand the legal regulation of termination of employment, including individual dispute resolution;
•    To consider collective labour relations, the role of collective bargaining and employee participation in the workplace and the provision of a legal framework within which these activities may take place;
•    To consider the effect of human rights and international labour law on the employment relationship

•    Contemporary Employment Relations
•    Equality at Work
•    Termination of Employment and Individual Dispute Resolution
•    Key Themes in Employment Law

Dissertation

•    12,000–15,000 words on an approved topic.

The programme is taught by distance learning combined with teaching weekends. You are provided with comprehensive course materials. All modules are assessed by written coursework. You are also able to access ongoing study support via the internet and by contacting the administrative and academic teams.
